The end of the school year is fast approaching! As we reflect on the school year, we are grateful for the strong partnerships and commitments that we have shared with all of you to strengthen your child's learning experiences. We are entering the last weeks of school and there are many wonderful learning activities planned for all students. We have updated the website calendar with the hope of helping parents be able to plan their schedules for end of the year activities.

May is full of exciting events on our campus. With the change in the weather and the increase in student activities we are seeing some overall changes in the students. Behavior is a little looser, homework is being missed and overall students appear to be ready for a summer break. The teachers and I have talked with students reminding them that we are expecting their best behavior in the classrooms, on the playground, and all areas of the school. We expect all students to behave in a respectful and safe manner. We are proud of them and their accomplishments and encourage students to finish out their school year doing their best! Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming events as the school year comes to a close. Please make sure you look for activity updates on our website and on flyers that get sent home.

Last but not least, I want to take a moment to thank each of you for your support of Alice Birney Elementary and our children. It has been a positive, fun-filled year with many activities, and none of it would have happened without you. What a great year it's been! I wish you a happy and safe summer and I look forward to seeing all of our kiddos' smiling faces when school begins on August 1^st.

¡El final del año escolar está rápidamente aproximándose! Al reflexionar sobre el año escolar, estamos agradecidos por la sólida alianza y compromisos que hemos compartido con todos ustedes para fortalecer las experiencias de aprendizaje de su hijo. Estamos entrando a las últimas semanas de clases y hay muchas actividades maravillosas de aprendizaje planificadas para todos los alumnos. Hemos actualizado el calendario en la página web con la esperanza de ayudar a los padres con la posibilidad de planificar sus horarios con las actividades de fin de año escolar.

Mayo está lleno de muchos eventos divertidos en nuestro plantel. Con el cambio de clima y el aumento den las actividades estudiantiles estamos viendo algunos cambios generales en los alumnos. El comportamiento está un poco más suelto, no están entregando la tarea y los alumnos en general parecen estar listos para las vacaciones de verano. Los maestros y yo hemos estado hablando con los alumnos recordándoles que esperamos su mejor comportamiento dentro de los salones, en el patio y todas las áreas de la escuela. Esperamos que todos los alumnos se comporten de una manera respetuosa y segura. ¡Estamos orgullosos de ellos y de sus logros y aconsejamos a los alumnos terminar su año escolar haciendo lo mejor que pueden! Muchas gracias por su continuo apoyo. Esperamos verlos durante uno de nuestros próximos eventos al llegar el término del año escolar. Por último pero no menos importante, quiero tomar un momento para agradecer a cada uno de ustedes por su apoyo de la escuela primaria Alice Birney y para nuestros alumnos. One major concern the staff, myself, and many parents, is the congestion of cars we experience afterschool on Olive Ave. Part of the reason for the increase in traffic is due to the fact we longer have bussing. We now have 300 extra students either walking home or getting picked up instead of getting bussed home. Because the bussing situation is out of our control, I am asking for everyone's patience and cooperation in making our dismissal process a safe and orderly one. Currently, we have students running across Olive Ave., in front of on-coming cars to meet their parents on the other side of the street. Parents are asking their 1st-6^th grade students to cross the street and often on-coming cars may not see them coming off the sidewalk. There are a couple of ways we can help eliminate the dangers and traffic congestion we face afterschool:

• Please do not use your cell phone during pick up time.
• Please do not stop in the middle of the street to call your student over to load your car.
• Please be patient while you are picking up your student.
• By arriving at 3:35 for dismissal, your pick up time should be shortened as traffic congestion has diminished significantly in 5 minutes.
• Remember that your child is safe, warm and dry waiting under a covered area, so there's no value in getting there early and simply sitting in the car waiting. All students should be picked up by 3:40. Any students not picked up by 3:40 will be brought to the office. Only individuals listed on the emergency card will be allowed to check out your student.
• Please remember that on Olive Ave, in front of the school, cars are only permitted to park on one side of the street. The side of the street across the school is a NO PARKING area. When vehicles park there, it becomes a huge challenge for cars to get through. We appreciate your help in keeping that side of the street clear.

Un problema principal del cual el personal, los padres y yo misma nos hemos dado cuenta es la congestión de vehículos que experimentamos después de clases por la Avenida Olive. Parte de la razón por la cual á incrementado el trafico es debido al hecho que ya no tenemos autobuses. Ahora tenemos unos 300 alumnos adicionales que caminan a casa o los recogen en vez de ser enviados a casa por autobús. Debido a que la situación de los autobuses está fuera de nuestro control, les pido a todos su paciencia y comprensión en hacer el proceso de la salida uno seguro y ordenado. Actualmente tenemos a alumnos que cruzan la avenida Olive, corriendo delante de los autos que vienen de dirección contraria, para reunirse con sus padres al otro lado de la calle. Los padres les están pidiendo a los alumnos de los grados de 1º a 6º cruzar la calle y a menudo los autos que vienen en dirección contraria podrían no verlos cruzar por la acera. Hay un par de maneras en las que pueden ayudar a eliminar los peligros y la congestión de tráfico que enfrentemos después de clases:

• Favor de no usar su teléfono celular a la hoja de recoger.
• Favor de no detenerse en medio de la calle para hablarle a su hijo a que se suba al auto.
• Favor de ser paciente mientras recoge a su alumno.
• Al llegar a las 3:35 para la hora de salida, el tiempo que le toma para recoger sería reducido, ya que en cinco minutos la congestión de tráfico ha disminuido significativamente.
• Recuerden que su hijo estará seguro, fresco y se mantiene seco esperando debajo de un área cubierta, por lo tanto no tiene caso llegar temprano y simplemente estar sentado en el auto esperando. Todos los alumnos deben recogerse para las 3:40. Cualquier alumno que no se haya recogido para las 3:40 será enviado a la oficina. Únicamente las personas apuntadas en la tarjeta de emergencia serán permitidas recoger a su alumno.
• Favor de recordar que por la Avenida Olive, enfrente de la escuela, a los autos únicamente se les permite estacionarse en un lado de la calle. El lado de la calle al otro lado de la escuela es un área de NO ESTACIONARSE. Cuando los vehículos se estacionan allí, es un gran problema para que los autos puedan pasar. Les agradecemos su ayuda en ayudar a mantener libre ese lado.

Si tienen algunas otras sugerencias o inquietudes sobre nuestros problemas a la hora de la salida, con gusto las escucharemos. Espero con anticipación tener un excelente año escolar 2012-2013.
