Dear Alice Birney Families,
As principal of Alice Birney Elementary School, it is my pleasure to welcome everyone back for another great year at Alice Birney. We are all excited to have students back in our classrooms and hallways, filling them with energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our goal to create an enriched learning environment that engages each child! Alice Birney Elementary has an excellent teaching staff with a wealth of knowledge and an outstanding support staff who work in different capacities to support your child's learning. This year's theme is "Year of Possibilities." Our aim is to provide your child the best education possible so that your child could reach his or her potential. Having a strong home/school connection is critical for your child's success. As the first teacher in your child's life, we need and welcome your support and cooperation.
This year, our focus will continue on Common Core standards. Additionally, we are excited to "kick-off" Positive Behavior Interventions and Systems (PBIS) this school year. PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is a systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems. The process focuses on improving a school's ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students. We spent the entire 2013-2014 school year, planning and preparing for PBIS implementation this year. You will be receiving more information and details about PBIS in the first weeks of school.
The year begins with a few changes to our staff. Our new additions include: Maritza Gonzalez, 1st grade teacher, Adriana Jasso, 3rd grade teacher, Joaquina Camacho, 2nd grade teacher, Sherry Norberg as our new Teacher on Assignment, and Denise Cervera, School Counselor. Welcome to Alice Birney! We had a couple of individuals leave our site. Mrs. Ligia Puraci, previous 2nd grade teacher, is now an Assistant Principal at Lewis Elementary. We had two staff members retire: Ms. Sue Levick, 2nd grade teacher and Joann Koester, Project Office Assistant. Congratulations! This year, we are happy to announce that our Assistant Principal, Ginna Slocum, will now be at our site full-time. She will no longer need to be shared by another site. We are very excited!
