Matthew Applebee is an alumnus of California State University, San Bernardino where he graduated with dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature and Composition and Creative Writing. After sixth months of substitute teaching in the Colton Joint Unified School District, Matthew was proud to join the Bruins of Bloomington High School in 2006 and taught English at BHS for six years.
 
Matthew is married to another Grand Terrace High School teacher, Katharine Applebee, and the happy couple is blessed to have a fierce and opinionated daughter. His role model as a father and a teacher is fictional father, Atticus Finch.
 
Matthew is passionate about stories, whether they are found in the four-color pages of comic books, the pixelated creations of the videogame world, or the inky rub of the printed page. As a teacher, Matthew has made it his goal to teach as many levels and types of students as he can, so he can lead his young charges through the sometimes scary, but always rewarding, pressures of high school life by connecting the skills gained inside the walls of GTHS to the challenges of the streets outside. “I hope to inspire my students to see how the themes and characters they encounter in my classroom can enrich the tapestry of their everyday lives.”
