CJUSD themes: Literacy, Technology & Continous Learning

CJUSD is a caring, innovative team of professionals dedicated to serving one of the most amazing communities anywhere. Examples of this are evident at every school and in every department. They take many forms and have many faces, but several themes run throughout.  These key priorities guide much that we do because of their huge importance. They are literacy, being future ready and continuous learning for all, including us adults.

Literacy is such a crucial and foundational part of education. Studies show that if students do not read at grade level by  third grade, their odds of ultimate success decrease. Each school and classroom supports literacy in numerous ways. We also support literacy at the district level. For example, our CJUSD Family Reading Con two years ago with guest authors and literacy-themed activities to engage families and encourage the love of reading. I also visit schools throughout the district for my Superintendent’s Student Book Club, to show students that our district leaders love to read and care about them enough to want to share the experience with them. It also allows us – by choosing books that cover important issues – to have discussions with students about topics such as equity, the importance of the choices you make, and how you treat others. As much as I hope (and believe) that students benefit from this, I feel like I have learned at least as much as they have through our discussions and time together.

Being future ready is also crucial to prepare our students for our ever-changing world. So many of us excel in using technology to enhance classroom instruction, community and staff engagement and collaboration.  We continue to follow the Future Ready Pledge that the Board and I took on behalf of our district, working toward thoughtful, planned, systemic and student-centered, personalized learning using technology. An important part of this is “Personalized Professional Learning.” Using technology as a tool for learning is not simply an assignment we give to our students. All of us - teachers, administrators and other education professionals - must continue to look for ways to improve our own skills and understanding. We must never stop looking for better ways to do things. And while we do offer more structured opportunities to do this through training and collaboration, one of the most important ways we should do it is by staying self-motivated and curious as professionals and to take chances.

You can find many examples of this work happening by joining the conversation on social media. If you haven’t already, start by finding me on Twitter or Instagram - @JerryAlmendarez – and the district on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook – @ColtonJUSD. You can also keep up on district and school site news by downloading our district app. Find it in the App store or on Google Play by searching for “Colton Joint USD”.

On behalf of the Board of Education and Executive Cabinet, please take the time to stay connected. Whether you are a parent, district employee, community member or all three of those, it takes all of us together to build the success our students deserve. I look forward to working together to reach the highest potential of both our students and ourselves.
